AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND
WORK 2020 — 2022
STOLEN 2023

Aotearoa's wild and varied landscapes are best experienced in person, with the further from civilisation you are the more profoundly enjoyable. This camper was built at a time when time was abundant and money was low. Materials chosen for the weight and affordability, expensive off-the-shelf projects replicated with surprising quality; gas struts replaced with bamboo poles, drawer sliders circumvented with carpet offcuts, and fabric curtains swapped in favour of painters drop sheets.
This project demanded much; four months of sanding, filling, welding, and painting a 1995 Toyota Hilux, late nights whilst working a full time job, blown clutches, rusty doors, fuel consumption increasing exponentially over 50km/h, odd looks and much thought. When outlined on paper the project didn't - and still doesn't - stack up, but the places seen and felt over the two years it were moving, cherished, and unforgettable.
On the 14th of February 2023 the camper was stolen outside of 39B View Road during a flash flood. It was insured, and the inheritance money has enabled countless further projects and travels abroad. Still, it is out there somewhere, hopefully sunning itself on a beach far from the demands of the city.
