The Ooze

This project is about New Zealand's subverted American Dream, non-fiction within fiction, working with suburban fabric rather than starting afresh, re-greening concrete roads and 15 year life span houses, revitalising cultural and environmental wastelands

AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND
THESIS 2022

The Ooze is a story about traumatic events threatening the largest remaining wetland reserve in the lower North Island and the adjacent peri-urban village of Pāuatahanui, about 40 kilometres northwest of Wellington. The tale is told from the perspective of the wairua, the spiritual dimension and holistic wellbeing, of Pāuatahanui.

Suburban sprawl has many unfortunate cultural, environmental and social dimensions. The Ooze proposes alternatives and, through storytelling, portrays them to a general audience. The three short films are somewhat comical, overt and fictitious, but the buildings and principles which they discuss are not. A humorous mask to allow serious issues and possible solutions to slip past.
