AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND
YEAR FOUR UNIVERSITY 2021
Tutors: Pip Cheshire and Chris Barton
Whilst walking the streets of Tamaki Makaurau Auckland in August of 2021 you would have been mistaken for presuming you had stumbled into a utopian dream. Bored from being locked inside for months, people resorted to playing outside with kids, sharing picnics with neighbours, generally being pleased to see one another. Superficially at least, for those hours spent outside people seemed happy, and every day was a Sunday.
This project proposes a town hall as part of a wider, brand new development Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa. It contains two galleries, an auditorium, workshop spaces, a cafe, and various areas of internal/external ambiguity. It aims to draw people in from afar through bold forms and materials, including a 120 metre long glass block wall on the southern facade, before gently pushing them out further into the park and surrounding scenery.
